From early on it has been clear to me that I wanted to become a storyteller, in some way or another. As such, it felt natural to start studying theatre at the University of Bern where I did not only learn a lot about dramaturgy, pacing and performance, but also a lot about European history.
However, during my studies in Bern I also realised that there are other ways to tell stories. Working at graphic design agency raschle & kranz, I learned that stories can be told visually, too. And that hypertext allows for stories that go beyond the linearity of stage plays.
I went to search for something that would bridge these fields, and found it in game design. After finishing up my studies in Bern with a master thesis that seamlessly combined theatre and game studies, I started to study game design at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK in 2008 and attained my bachelor’s degree in 2011. My bachelor thesis project was a serious game to raise awareness of bullying among teenagers, featuring an unusual graphic look, multilinear storytelling as well as complex simulations running under the hood.
I created the concept as well as took part in the development of a rehabilitation game for kids for the Serious Games division at the Zurich University of the Arts, in cooperation with the Rehabilitation Centre of the Children’s Hospital of the University of Zurich in Affoltern am Albis, extending my knowledge in the field of serious games considerably.
For four years I was working at Tamedia where I created interactive visualisations and experimented with new forms of digital storytelling for the paid newspaper websites tagesanzeiger.ch and derbund.ch.
Now I’m the graphics team lead for NZZ Visuals, where I continue to turn data into stories and visualisations.
All these years of learning and soaking up knowledge have turned me into a proficient generalist, allowing me to effortlessly combine art with technology, scientific knowledge with practical application and attention to detail while keeping the big picture in mind. My portfolio shows the full breadth of my skills: writing and storytelling, graphic design, illustration, web development, game design, game development, 3D modelling, programming amongst others.
